week 4 Reading/writing with Technology

Hi all,

Sorry for posting on my blog this late, it's been a very hectic week for me. Sometimes I wish there is more than 24 hours a day. I managed to read the recommended articles which were full of bright ideas to use technology for promoting students' learning and enhancing their performance. Using the Internet in my teaching was limited to searching for recources to use in class with my students. Now I will try to use it more widely and involve the students more effectively in using the Internet resources.
Today was the first day of the week here in Qatar. I started my teaching at 8.00 am, the students were sleepy and yawning all the time. When I asked about the reasons, most of them said they had a long night in front of the computer watching a movie, playing games or chating with friends. Here I desided to give them a weekly task to do over the weekend using the Internet. Everyone in the class agreed and they seemed enthusiastic. I'll see how it goes and let you know next week.

Planning my lessons is something I do weekly, but I have to admit that I do not put them down in details as I did for our task this week as I find it time consuming. I keep my lesson plans simple just to keep track of what I do in class, especially when I teach more than one group.
I add details to my plans as the need arises.

I haven't had the chance to read all the discussion of this week and I feel terrible about it. Reading our colleagues posts is the most interesting activity for me, because learning from each other experiences is much more better than learning from books or articles. I also wanted to enhance my blog and try new things, maybe change the appearance, add pictures and links. I don't know how to do it but I'll learn by trying. It will take me sometime, so maybe next week.

Have a good week everyone

Maha

  1. Hi, Maha!

Does your week begin on Sunday? It is an interesting culture note!

As for me, it was a busy week also, so I have to work hard today, on Sunday - our rest day!

And nice idea about giving hometask for whole week - I have some problems with homework in my 9th grade (I wrote about this at nicenet)

And, one more - if you have any question about computer skills and making changes of the blog, you can ask me. I answer you with great pleasure.

I wrote to Hammid how to make the additional pages to blog in the comments to his post "Comments on lesson plans"

  2. Hello Maha,

it's a great thing to post your students' homework / assignment on the internet. You motivate them even more. They are all computer and internet addicted and in this way we can enable them to use it wisely. I have had this idea about giving their homework online for about two years, but maybe soon I will practice it.

As for changing the face of your blog, all you have to do is play around and discover. It's very easy and pleasant. I've done it and I got the result I want. I can help you with adding links. When you write your posts, in the upper page, you have the word "Link". You select the text in your post which you want to be linked, then you press "Link", a pop-up window opens and there you write the name of the web page (I do it by copy-paste). In this pop-up window you have the option of checking the link. It's extremely easy!

    All the best,
    Nadina

  3. Hello Maha,

I also don't use a lesson plan template to prepare for my classes. However, I think it will be good for me as I am a new teacher. I know it's time consuming but the more experienced you are the less detailed lesson plan you need. It will also be easier if you have taught the lesson before. In this case, you'll just need to take out the things that didn't work well and add new ideas.

    Yours,

    Mohamed

  4. Hello everyone,

I see that the issue of lesson planning comes back like a boomerang. Mohamed wrote that teaching a lesson for the second time is easier. Yes and no – I would say since it ALL depends on the group you are teaching. I usually have two or three groups at the same level, doing the same things but at different times during one day. The first lesson is a challenge and struggle with time, the second usually flows smoothly, whereas the third is the shortest and the hardest since I do not frequently remember if I have already said a thing in this group or maybe in the previous one. Perhaps I am generalizing here but going into routine may spoil and destroy the best teacher! Be cautious then!

    Yours,
    Joanna
